The song, “The Gospel,” has been on the radio for a week now. But, who is the singer behind it?
Ryan Stevenson is a Christian Contemporary, singer/songwriter from Bonanza, Oregon. His music career began in 2007 with the release of his first record, Running to You. Since then, Stevenson has released several albums and EPs, including his most well-known album, Fresh Start (2015). However, no matter the song or album, there are always two characteristics that radiate from Stevenson’s music. Each track features raw, meaningful lyrics, alongside foot-tapping music. Through these, Stevenson takes his listeners on a journey. He speaks of the hardships of life, yet tells of the hope you can find if you place your hope in God.
Stevenson’s single, “Eye of the Storm (feat. Gabe Real)” is a perfect example.
The lyrics proclaim:
“When the solid ground is falling out from underneath my feet…
When I realize I’ve been sold out by my friends and my family
I can feel the rain reminding me
In the eye of the storm, You remain in control…
You alone are the anchor, when my sails are torn
Your love surrounds me in the eye of the storm”
The song details some of the hardest times one can face in life—the loss of a loved one, an unexpected diagnosis, an uncertain future. Despite all this, Stevenson declares his faith that God remains in control through it all. It is a hope he clings when facing times of
hardship. Have you ever had one song that just hits you at the right time? For me, “Eye of the Storm” was that song. During a time of struggle, the lyrics of “Eye of the Storm” broke through to me. The music kept my interest, but the lyrics are what uplifted my soul. Stevenson’s words reminded me God provides and supports us, even when the world
feels like its falling apart. It was this message that made me want to hear more.
As I dug deeper into Stevenson’s music, I realized it was not just “Eye of the Storm” that
proclaimed this message of hope. All of Stevenson’s songs speak of his faith and the hope you can find in God. They speak of God’s love.
Stevenson’s newest single, “The Gospel,” is no exception. It speaks of the power of the Gospel. saying:
“It’s the cure for our condition
It’s the good news for us all
It’s greater than religion
It’s the power of the Cross.”
It is through these songs Stevenson speaks truth to his listeners. He desires his audience to know the hope they can find in God. But, Stevenson also understands life throws you curveballs. So, his songs speak to the moments that can make you question if God is really there as well.
For anyone searching for music that speaks truth, while acknowledging the hardships of life, Ryan Stevenson is an artist worth checking out.
